Water is the Koi’s environment, much like air for us. When the water is healthy, Koi are healthy. Often it is thought that crystal-clear water is healthy water. It is not.
I was very surprised with the difference in koi pond filter systems from US to Japan, origin of Koi. All the filters are very similar to pressurized mechanical filters for swimming pools. The bead filters will keep the water crystal-clear, but I doubt how healthy the water will be to make Koi healthy and beautiful.
It is not much of an exaggeration to say the competition at All Japan Koi Show, the world’s largest Koi show, is in reality a competition of how well you can manage your Koi pond water. Why did Mr. Kodama make BioClean pond filter for koi?
After I have visited many clients in the USA, I realized that many of them are using the same type of filter system. With this system “you collect the koi waste, clean the filter and throw the waste away.”
Throwing away the waste means that you are throwing away the nutrients for bacteria. Also, you must keep cleaning the filter regularly. If you forget to clean it, the wastes will become sludge that produce methane gas, and that makes the water bad. That could also cause the koi to get sick or even could cause them to die. When you restart the filter system in spring is an especially risky time.
If you fail to clean the pond filter system correctly, the gas that was kept in the filter will be released to the pond. This could make the koi sick.
My “BioClean” koi filter system isn’t structured for the collection of wastes. Therefore, you don’t have to clean the system regularly, and it won’t make water bad when you start using it again in spring.

The secret of the BioClean filter mats for biological filtration
Usually there are 2 types of bacteria that grow in the filter systems. One is aerobic bacteria that likes oxygen, and other is anaerobic bacteria that doesn’t like oxygen. What koi needs is aerobic bacteria. As you can see in my “BioClean”’s filter, there are 3.5mm x 3.5mm holes on the mats. This way, only aerobic bacteria can grow on the filter.
In the past, we used sands and pebbles in the filter system to filter the water. When the wastes were deposited in the layer of the sands, anaerobic bacteria grew and ate the wastes. This actually made the water clear.
However the anaerobic bacteria produced methane gas that causes koi to get sick.
“BioClean” doesn’t grow anaerobic bacteria on its filter because of its structural design.
The secret is the holes on the mat. The water flows rapidly through the holes, but it flows slowly through the mats. That’s how it grows aerobic bacteria and not anaerobic bacteria.The filter system that used sand and pebbles were good. Sand and pebble didn’t deteriorated like other filter materials, so they didn’t affect the pond’s water.
However, it requires cleaning regularly; or the wastes would produce methane gas.
After sand pebbles, we started using rough fiber mats that you see in today’s filter systems. But this filter media is made with chemical fiber and its 40% glue. This glue might have the possibility of making the water bad. This glue is not used in the mats we use in “BioClean”

Clogging cause uneven flow patterns inside the filter, ultimately leading to undesirable anaerobic bacterial growth. This creates unhealthy water and will lead to illness in your Koi. Low Maintenance
BioClean eliminates the need for periodic cleaning, such as backwashing, which is necessary on bead filters. Weekly backwashing removes a lot of useful “waste” which is food for beneficial bacteria. The specially-designed EvenFlow Bio-Mat and fully engineered structure collects and evenly distributes waste inside the chambers, allowing beneficial bacterial colonies to grow more efficiently. Excess waste & debris are collected at the bottom, which can be easily flushed via two conveniently located waste valves.

Take a look at this picture below. The pond water comes into the layer of black magnets and filters. There are 20 filtering mats set in there. The water flows through the filter and onto the magnets. Then the water goes into the middle divided section where UV light is set to kill plankton in the water and make water clear. The water then comes out from the top on the other side and flows through the filtering mats and come out as the clean water from the bottom pipe. The water travels down the difference in level in the system. So we can use it forever because it won’t break. This is very good for koi as well!
