“Hello Kodama Koi Family!
My story starts way before I was old enough to take care of any fish. My story starts with my aunt, who started a small pond at my grandfather’s house. It was a sanctuary of sorts for everyone in my family. When she passed unexpectedly to suicide, my grandfather kept the pond in what I could only imagine was a way to keep her legacy alive. But it actually fueled his passion for koi keeping as well, leading to a much bigger pond build, which is enjoyed by everyone in the family when we gather at his house for parties etc.
Fast forward 20 years and I finally buy a house with a nice yard to start my own family. One of the first things I do is put in a small prefab pond with a few koi. This pond started a passion for me that grows every year, but more importantly it is a way for me to connect to my grandfather, who is 99 years old and mom (who has a small pond herself and takes care of my grandfathers with me).
Furthering this family passion for koi, my daughter Ava is born and one of her favorite things to do is feed the fish. Creating another generation of koi lover in our family! A few years goes by and I decide to expand my pond to what it is today. The first two fish put in, were gifted to me from grandpas pond. A bekko, and yamabuki ogon butterfly, both are estimated 15 years old. Its modest in size, 800 gallons, hand dug by myself but with the help of my mom and dad as you can see in the pictures. It has a skimmer/biofalls and Matala II for filtration. It has been a labor of love, frustration and joy.
I lost three fish this season to a local heron, one being a Gin Rin Chagoi from Kodama in NY 🙁 I have replaced it this year with a Orenji Ogon from Kodama, which is my daughters new favorite in the pond! Im in the planning stages of upgrading in the next year or two to a 3,500 gallon so I can enjoy more fish and give them the best home possible.
Koi keeping is more than just fish, it is about family and enjoying these living jewels!”

Arthur, thank you for being candid about the suicide of your aunt and how your grandfather navigated through this loss. I liked reading your story very much.
