Thank You, Brian B. – Proof That Heart Matters More Than Size

Brian, your story reminds us that a koi pond’s true value lies not in its size or cost, but in the love, laughter, and memories it holds. From DIY determination to the unforgettable journey home with your Kikokuryu—fondly known as “Barf”—you’ve built more than a pond; you’ve created a legacy of joy with your family. We’re honored that your first special koi came from Kodama, and even more honored to be part of your story.

Thank you for sharing your journey with us as we proudly celebrate 25 years of Kodama Koi Farm.

Customer Story By: Brian B.

“My pond isn’t the biggest or the prettiest—but I love it. What I’ve learned through the process is that you don’t need a lot of money to build something meaningful.

The pond measures 10 feet by 5 feet and is 5.5 feet deep. I built it using a Firestone 45 mil rubber liner, a 3-inch PVC shower drain, and DIY filtration. Nothing fancy, but it works!

The first really special koi I ever bought came from Kodama Koi Farm in Saddle River, NJ. It was a stunning, gunmetal-silver metallic Kikokuryu. (It doesn’t quite look like that anymore!) I still remember the day we brought it home like it was yesterday—not because of the fish, but because of the ride.

We had the koi in a box on the floor of the back seat. Halfway through the long drive back to Staten Island, my son got carsick and threw up—all over the box and the bag the fish was in. My daughter, trying not to laugh, immediately dubbed the poor koi “BARF.” Somehow the name stuck, and to this day, we still call that fish “BARF” or sometimes “Ralph.”

This pond isn’t just water and fish—it’s about the memories we’ve built around it, and the pride that comes from creating something with your own hands.”
