JOSIE – 18 Years of Heart at Kodama Koi Farm

As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Kodama Koi Farm, we take time to honor the people who have stood beside us through the years. Among them is Josie, our longest-serving team member, who has been part of the Kodama family since 2006.
Josie has spent her days not in an office, but in the heart of the action—working on the farm, hands-on with the koi. Feeding, cleaning, packing, supporting shipments—her fingerprints are on nearly every part of daily life at the farm.

Through Hawaii’s sun, rain, and the physical demands of farm work, Josie has shown an unwavering spirit. She remembers the early days when everything was smaller, simpler, and every team member had to wear many hats.

One memory she holds dear is working with Mr. Kodama, the founder and father of Taro Kodama.

“He was always calm, always kind. I respected him so much,” she recalls with a quiet smile. Even after all these years, her voice softens when speaking about him—proof of the impact he had not just on the business, but on the people around him.

When asked what has kept her here for over 18 years, Josie doesn’t hesitate: “The people… and the koi. I love being around them.”

To us, Josie represents everything we strive for—loyalty, humility, and heart. She’s helped care for thousands of koi, supported countless shipments, and quietly held up the farm day after day.

Thank you, Josie, for being part of our story. Your hands helped build this farm. Your heart helped build our family.

My 18-Year Journey at Kodama Koi Farm — by Josie

I first started working at Kodama Koi Farm back in 2004. At that time, the farm was still small, and we all had to help with everything. My job was mainly on the farm side — feeding the koi, cleaning the tanks, preparing the fish for shipping — whatever needed to be done, we did it as a team.

Working on the farm isn’t always easy. The days can be long and hot, and sometimes there’s rain or other challenges. But through it all, I’ve enjoyed being here, surrounded by beautiful koi and great people. There’s something peaceful and special about working with the koi every day.

One of my most special memories is working with Mr. Kodama (Taro’s father). He was always so calm, so kind, and very respectful. Even though he was the founder, he treated everyone with care. I really admired him, and I feel lucky that I had the chance to work with him in those early years.

Now, after 20 years, when people ask me why I’ve stayed so long, my answer is simple: the people, and the koi. I truly enjoy being here every day, doing what I do.

I’m proud to be part of Kodama Koi Farm’s 25-year history. It feels like being part of a family — and I’m grateful to have grown together with the farm through all these years.
