“Submitting this on behalf of my family and I! It all started in the late 90s when my mom wanted a tiny pond off the deck of the backyard. My dad instantly said no, but like a good husband, he went and dug a pond before my brother’s baptism. After that, they had a party at the house, and everyone gave compliments on the tiny plastic 100-gallon molded pond.
My dad then stated it was his idea for the pond, and ever since then, it has kept increasing in size over the years. My favorite memory was back around 2006-2009, there was a shop around the corner from my grandma’s house that would give out free koi to the mothers on Mother’s Day, and that quickly became a yearly tradition of riding bikes across town getting to pick out a free koi for my mom and dad which then eventually turned into buying a fish every year for her lol.
I would say the special koi in our pond has to be at least a 36-inch orange butterfly that has a tail so long, I think it adds a foot to its length, and people go “WOW, THAT’S HUGE!” when they see it. Another special one could be the one we call Bertha, and the main female we’ve had for about 26 years!
A lesson I’ve personally learned from having koi is taking a moment to connect with nature and respect the true beauty that the ecosystem brings, like baby frogs, dragonflies, yearly ducks, and all the birds that bathe in the stream. Making a 6,500-gallon pond made it the center of our backyard, and you can see that in the pictures, we hand-dig and expand the pond ourselves every 1-3 years as a family.
From my siblings and I growing up with the pond to my nieces now helping pull string algae out of the streams, it has brought us closer. We even occasionally take a family road trip and get some koi from breeding places around us. I even started my own koi pond service business because I’ve enjoyed having a pond growing up, and I want to extend that same feeling to others! Dreams are to expand the pond once more to house all the baby fish we just had!“
