“My Fintastic Pond Journey
My fintastic pond journey is 18 years old and still going strong. I’ve always loved fish—their colors, sizes, personalities, and endless variety. Everything about them fascinates me. I believe we should observe, not disturb, the incredible gifts we’ve been given by God. And to me, no gift displays grace, beauty, and peace quite like koi—well, aside from my family. Our koi are family to us.
This journey began when I grew tired of staring at the blank canvas that was our backyard. That summer, our daughter and her boyfriend were looking to earn some extra cash, so they grabbed two shovels and started digging. The result was a modest 2,500-gallon DIY pond—and a lifelong passion for me. You could say I was instantly hooked, though I’m not a fan of that term for obvious reasons.
Over the past 18 years, I’ve learned countless lessons about pond design, water parameters, and which fish varieties can thrive together in Texas weather. There’s no better experience than owning a koi pond for peace, tranquility, and joy. I’ve made it through many life moments simply by sitting beside the pond, slowing down, and clearing my mind. I know it was no accident that I had a pond during those times.
Charlie (yes, they all have names) is special to me. He’s from the first batch of koi I ever purchased. He’s survived my early mistakes and nature’s predators. I still remember the look on my children’s faces when we released him and his batchmates 18 years ago.
Today, Charlie and his angels enjoy a newly finished 9,000-gallon home with bottom drains, aeration, three waterfalls, UV, and plenty of filtration. Next up: finishing the landscaping, adding some prized fish to our family, and completing the tea house by the pond. I can already envision our children and grandchildren releasing their own fish into this family treasure. “
