“I was born in the early 60s and spent my youth in Enghien-les-Bains, just north of Paris. Et oui, je suis français! If you look it up, you’ll see there’s a lake in town—and lucky me, my parents had a waterfront property. For a young and somewhat lonely kid, the mystery and allure of the water were priceless. None of my relatives knew how to fish, and there was no Internet back then, so I just made things up as I went. I remember taking a rowboat to cut 6- to 8-foot bamboo stalks growing on an abandoned property and turning them into fishing poles. I tried to catch anything that moved—from frogs to gudgeon to roach. One day, I even cornered a pike with my boat, jumped into the water, grabbed it with my hands, and tossed it into the boat! After that little exploit, my mother cooked it, and it made for a very special meal.

But my real dream was to catch a big carp. I had caught small ones before, using a piece of bread and a bobber, but I had read they could grow larger than 10 kilos (20 pounds). More than once, I went to bed imagining landing a record carp from the lake. I started leaving a baited line in the water overnight, using a large hook and a grasshopper. In the early morning, I’d check it from the boat—no luck. One time, I finally had something! Alas, it was just a tench (and I haven’t caught one since). Another day, I was absentmindedly reeling in the line, not realizing it had moved. Suddenly, it tightened, the water boiled—and I had a carp on! I managed to land it. It was a monster! …”
