Thank You, Jesse L. – A Pond Full of Heart and Humor

As we celebrate Kodama’s 25th Anniversary, we want to thank you, Jesse, for reminding us what truly matters—passion, family, and unforgettable memories (including one unforgettable koi named “BARF”).

Your story proves that a pond doesn’t need to be extravagant to be meaningful. From DIY filters to cherished car rides, every detail reflects your love for the hobby and the joy it brings. We’re honored that one of your first special koi came from us, and even more honored to be part of your family’s pond journey. Here’s to many more memories!

Customer Story By: Jesse L

“My pond isn’t the biggest or the prettiest—but I love it. What I’ve learned through the process is that you don’t need a lot of money to build something meaningful.

The pond measures 10 feet by 5 feet and is 5.5 feet deep. I built it using a Firestone 45 mil rubber liner, a 3-inch PVC shower drain, and DIY filtration. Nothing fancy, but it works!

The first really special koi I ever bought came from Kodama Koi Farm in Saddle River, NJ. It was a stunning, gunmetal-silver metallic Kikokuryu. (It doesn’t quite look like that anymore!) I still remember the day we brought it home like it was yesterday—not because of the fish, but because of the ride.

We had the koi in a box on the floor of the back seat. Halfway through the long drive back to Staten Island, my son got carsick and threw up—all over the box and the bag the fish was in. My daughter, trying not to laugh, immediately dubbed the poor koi “BARF.” Somehow the name stuck, and to this day, we still call that fish “BARF” or sometimes “Ralph.”

This pond isn’t just water and fish—it’s about the memories we’ve built around it, and the pride that comes from creating something with your own hands.”
