How One Visit to Kodama Koi Farm Changed Everything

We’re honored to celebrate Kodama’s 25th Anniversary with Joan F.—a passionate koi enthusiast whose journey with Kodama began in 2007 and continues to flourish today. From building her dream pond to raising champion koi, Joan’s dedication reflects the very spirit of our community. Thank you, Joan, for trusting us all these years and for inspiring others with your love of koi.

Customer Story By: Joan F.

In 2007, I walked into Kodama Koi Farm for the very first time—and my life has never been the same since.

I still remember the moment clearly: standing by the pond, completely mesmerized by a stunning Ginrin Showa, about 22 inches long. She sparkled like a jewel in the water. I had no idea what I was doing, only that I had to have her. I told Taro about the small backyard pond that came with our new home. Without hesitation, he smiled and said, “Let’s take a look.”

That very afternoon, he and his father, Mamoru Kodama, came over. That visit ended with a complete transformation: our front yard became home to a 35,000-gallon pond—designed by Mamoru himself—complete with a charming bridge. Just like that, we weren’t just koi owners—we were on a journey.

Koi Hunting in Japan

In 2010, I joined the Kodamas on one of their famous annual koi-hunting trips to Japan. What I thought would be a fun trip became a life-changing adventure. We wandered through winding mountain roads, no signs, no maps—just endless rows of remote mud ponds.

I was amazed by the trust among breeders, leaving their greenhouses unlocked even during harvest. Meeting the breeders in person, watching the koi at different stages of their lives—it was magical. It was humbling.

From Curiosity to Commitment: My Koi Journey Begins

That first trip became a tradition. For 15 years now—every October and January—I’ve returned to Japan. October means koi-hunting in Ojiya and visiting Omosako Koi Farm in Hiroshima. January is for the All Japan Koi Show and another visit to Ojiya. Of course, COVID paused everything—but my heart never left.

Finding My Koi Style With Isa Koi Farm and Omosako

Along the way, my preferences became clearer. For Kohaku and Showa, there’s only one place I go: Isa Koi Farm. Though I’ll occasionally buy from other breeders (Omosako always tempts me), I’ve come to trust Isa-san and Omosako-san completely. They know my taste better than I do.

While I don’t buy koi for competition, I trust my instincts—if a koi catches my eye, I’ll have it bowled and listen carefully to their thoughts. Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate not just the beauty, but the health, the bloodlines, and the soul of Japanese koi.

The Unexpected Joy of Food, Family Mart, and Friendship

And then there’s the food. I used to think 7-Eleven was just a convenience store—until I tasted their food in Japan! That blew my mind. I told Taro I would never look at 7-Eleven the same way again. Now I’m just as hooked on Lawson and Family Mart.

Still, nothing beats my favorite spots: Apoll, the barbecue place, Ue-King… and, of course, Ikotte in Ojiya.

Sake, Stories, and Isa-san at Ikotte

Ikotte isn’t just a bar. It’s where Isa-san introduced me to the smoothest, most unforgettable sake I’ve ever tasted: Iono. That was in 2016—and every time I return to Ojiya, Taro and I meet Isa-san there to relive that magic. Sometimes Hide, Hiro, and Kua join us.

It’s become tradition. It’s become family.

What I’ve Learned From Taro and the Koi Community

And through it all, Taro has remained at the heart of this journey. His knowledge, passion, and sincerity continue to inspire me. He doesn’t just sell koi—he lives for them. And he cares deeply about his customers.

I’ve learned so much from him—not just about koi, but about commitment, joy, and heart.

17 Years With Kodama Koi Farm—and I’m Still Hooked

Seventeen years after that first visit, I still can’t imagine my life without koi. And I certainly can’t imagine it without Kodama Koi Farm. As Kodama celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of their journey—and to have had them as part of mine.

I’m not done yet. There are still more koi to meet, more ponds to visit, more sake to share. And hopefully, many more adventures with Taro.
