Customer Story By: Karen O.

My family’s love affair with water features and koi began when the house I purchased had 5 fir trees planted in a row less than 20 feet from the back door. The potential for disaster crossed my mind and I had them professionally cut down and the stumps pulled out. This left a 20 x 40 foot crater in the back yard

What to do?

Make a pond of course!  And make it look as Pacific Northwest natural as possible and as inexpensively as possible.

My largest expense was the liner.  For the liner barrier I asked the local flooring company if I could take any used carpets. I was directed to their huge dumpster out back and they told me to help myself, take as much as I wanted. They didn’t have dump fees for 2 weeks!

My son’s, then 8 and 9 years old, and I had great adventures trekking through the woods collecting land and water plants, rocks and driftwood  from nearby lakes to naturalize our pond.

The bio-filters were made with garden hoses and sump pumps filtering through Rubbermaid garbage cans filled with pea gravel and topped with industrial floor scrubber pads before cascading over into the waterfalls.

Our first residents were tadpoles, water salamanders and a bullfrog the size of a dinner plate!

One morning an ad in our local paper caught my eye. “Pond overcrowded, koi for sale $1, $5, $10”.  The boys picked out ten $1 koi that were about 6 inches each and in various colors.  I asked the owner how long it would be before they could potentially reproduce and was told “probably in a couple of years”.

A few months later I was calling him back as we had thumbnail sized fish swimming around!  “Lady”, he exclaimed,  “they must really love your pond!” We are pretty sure that your gorgeous Tancho really would too!
