” My koi journey started with a simple dream: I wanted a peaceful spot in my backyard where I could relax and watch koi swim. I had no experience, no help—just a shovel, a vision, and a lot of determination. I built everything by hand. Dug the hole myself. Laid every rock. Built the filtration system from scratch, learning as I went.
The beginning was rough. I lost all my first koi. It crushed me. But instead of giving up, I decided to really dive in and learn.
I read everything I could about pond ecosystems, water quality, oxygen levels, and koi care. It became more than a hobby—it became a challenge. The water cleared and the new koi were thriving.
One of the most special moments in this journey was when I brought home a big Chagoi from Kodama Koi Farm. He wasn’t just a fish—he had a calm, gentle presence. He’d swim right up to me, let me hand-feed him, even let me pet him.
Over time, I formed a real bond with him. I’d find myself sitting by the pond longer just to see him, and there was something incredibly grounding about those quiet moments we shared. Losing him hit me hard. It’s something only other koi keepers might truly understand—that deep, emotional connection you can form with a fish.
He was the heart of the pond for a while, and even now, I still think about him when I’m out there. He reminded me why I started all of this in the first place—to create something meaningful, peaceful, and alive.
Koi fish have taught me so much—patience, perseverance, and that sometimes the best things come from trial and error. The pond has brought calm into my life, transformed my backyard, and given me something meaningful to share with my family.
I still have dreams for the pond—maybe expanding it, adding more koi, and continuing to create a space that’s not just beautiful, but full of life. But honestly, I’m just grateful I stuck with it. Because what started as a backyard project has become something so much more.”
