Thank You, Michael – A Slope Transformed into Serenity

As we celebrate Kodama’s 25th Anniversary, we’re deeply honored to recognize koi keepers like you, Michael, whose passion has turned a patch of eroding earth into a sanctuary of life and reflection.

Your story reminds us that koi ponds are more than water and stone—they are places where memories live, guardians are remembered, and bonds are formed across species and generations. From the laughter sparked by your goofy-eyed Kohaku to the watchful protection of Cooper, your journey reflects the very spirit of koi keeping.

Customer Story By: Michael M.

What began as a patch of eroding dirt and grass on a small slope in my yard has become the soul of the whole yard – a living, breathing koi pond filled with beauty, peace, and meaning.

At first, I considered goldfish, but they didn’t speak to me the way koi did. Every time I saw koi swimming I was mesmerized by their size, colors, and slow elegant movements.

Built in 1998, the 17′ by 8′ oval pond has three levels of depth and a split-stream waterfall. It includes a bio-falls filter and a small pool filter for crystal clear water. Aquatic plants add color and a natural look among the stones.

Today I care for 12 koi including Kohaku, Showa, Ai Goromo, and Soragoi. One Kohaku has big, goofy eyes that always make me laugh. Another koi has survived since the beginning, through predator attacks and winters.

My favorite memory isn’t just about the koi, but about the bond they created. After my loyal Weimaraner passed away in 2005 – who unknowingly served as the pond’s guardian – raccoons and herons started showing up. One day, sitting outside with my new wire-haired fox terrier, Cooper, I started barking at any bird that flew by the pond and rewarding him with a treat. It took about a week and a half, but Cooper finally found his new calling. He began barking at birds near the pond all on his own, eyes darting to me for approval and of course a treat. From that moment on, not a single fish has been lost.

The pond has taught me patience, especially earning the koi’s trust to hand-feed them. It’s connected me to the frogs, turtles, and snails that visit. I started with pet-quality koi, but over time I began winning beautiful koi from Kodama Koi auctions.

The pond changed my yard, but more than that, it changed me. Even if I never add another stone, the pond has given me something rare and perfect – a place where life, loss, beauty, and growth all come together in the water.
