Customer Story By: Tom & Shannon B.
“My journey to pond care and koi keeping.
For over 20 years, my husband Tom and I have cherished our Koi Pond. Tom, the dedicated caretaker, managed the pond and koi, while I enjoyed the serenity it brought, often teasing him about his “Koi Farm” and occasionally grumbling about the water and power bills.
In June 2024, our lives took an unexpected turn. I found Tom in the pump house, unable to stand and in excruciating pain. This moment marked the beginning of a challenging year filled with hospitals and rehabilitation. Tom’s illness rendered him unable to care for the pond or guide me in its upkeep. Suddenly, I was responsible for a 6,000-gallon pond and 25 koi during a scorching summer, with no idea where to start. The task seemed insurmountable, and I considered giving up the pond, overwhelmed by the demands of caring for Tom, maintaining the pond, and working full-time.
But in the face of adversity, we often discover our true strength. With the unwavering support of our family and the Idaho Water Garden and Koi Society, I embarked on a journey of learning. I delved into water quality, pump maintenance, koi feeding, and basic health care. When my koi faced serious health issues, I turned to Kodama for koi food, medications and instructional videos and my confidence began to grow. Maybe I can do this after all!
Amidst the chaos, the pond became my sanctuary. I vividly remember the moment my favorite koi, “Pearl,” ate from my hand. A picture of Pearl is attached. A profound sense of peace and joy washed over me as I watched these beautiful creatures swim gracefully. That moment marked a turning point, and my life has never been the same.”
