History Of Utsurimono

 

Utsurimono are one of the most recognizable families of Japanese koi. Their name refers to the striking "reflection" or contrast created between the black Sumi base and the contrasting pattern. The three traditional varieties of Utsurimono are:

  • Shiro Utsuri — black and white
  • Ki Utsuri — black and yellow
  • Hi Utsuri — black and red

Among these, Shiro Utsuri and Ki Utsuri are especially prized for the dramatic contrast between Sumi and their secondary color.

 

What Makes a Great Utsuri?

 

When judging Utsurimono, Sumi quality and pattern development are especially important.

A desirable Utsuri should have strong, clean Sumi that creates balance throughout the body. Ideally, the pattern works harmoniously from the head through the shoulder and toward the tail.

Look for:

  • Strong, deep Sumi
  • Clean contrast between colors
  • Balanced pattern placement
  • Good Sumi wrapping around the body
  • Strong head and shoulder pattern
  • Clean fins and overall body conformation

Special pattern characteristics such as Ichimatsu (checkerboard-style patterning) or Hariwake patterns can add additional appeal and value.
